The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar met with Goodluck Jonathan, the former president of Nigeria, in a closed-door meeting. The presidential candidate released images of the meeting on his verified Twitter profile on Friday, November 18, while the meeting’s specifics are yet unknown.
There was a prior rumor that Atiku, the PDP leadership, and Atiku intended to contact the former president to ask him to intervene and end the turmoil that is roiling the opposition party. After Atiku emerged as the PDP’s presidential candidate, the umbrella party has been engulfed in crises that have not yet been resolved. Iyorchia Ayu, the party’s national chairman, has been called to resign by the party’s southern group, which is led by Nyesom Wike, the governor of Rivers state.
Additionally, Ayu had openly stated that he would step down from the PDP chairperson if Atiku, a northerner, were to become the party’s presidential nominee. However, since Atiku has emerged, the northerner, the PDP chairman has failed to keep his word. Since then, the conflict has persisted, causing the G-5—the party’s five governors—to decide they will not back Atiku’s bid for the presidency unless their demands for justice and fairness are satisfied.
