The inspector general of police, Usman Alkali-Baba has claimed that some governors are behind the thugs that interrupt opposition rallies and political events in their states. According to Leadership, the police chief made this statement on November 17 while meeting with political parties, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), political parties, and other interested parties in the 2023 election.
Alkali-Baba revealed that 52 incidents of political violence have so far been documented since the start of the 2023 presidential election campaign, although he omitted the names of the governors. He mentioned that the police will deal with the new issue without delay.
The police commissioner also cautioned politicians against murderous acts that may sabotage the 2023 election.
The IGP continued by saying that electoral violence during elections has always presented dangers to the continued existence of democracy.
